Ted was born in 1932 on a farm in Manitoba before the days of electric power, and he has been an avid naturalist since childhood. He earned a BSc (Hons) degree from the University of Manitoba, in 1956, and a PhD in Botany from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1961. Ted is the author of some 100 scientific and popular articles in natural history and ecology. He was the first President and Executive Director of the Canadian Nature Federation (1971–76) and for some years served as National President of the Canadian Parks & Wilderness Society. Currently, Ted is the editor of a website on ecocentric ethics. Inspired by Stan Rowe, a Canadian ecologist and environmental philosopher, the website is an anthology of literature exploring the intrinsic values of the ecosphere – its natural ecosystems, communities and wild species – as the natural source of a new "earth ethic" for humanity.
